If you have ever played on a team, you most likely have seen an example of a poor sport. You can spot him or her easily. It's the team member who throws the ball or racket in anger. They're also the athletes who cheat, purposefully foul someone, and get angry with the referee or umpire. Sports provide an opportunity to exercise, make friends, learn about team-work and have a good time! Winning is only a fringe benefit. Good coaches and athletes know this. Bad sports can affect an entire team. They can make losing - or winning - miserable for everyone. Remember, even if your team loses, you may have played exceptionally well - like scoring the only goal for your team.
A Good Sport.
Winning may not be everything, but everyone wants to win. How does a good sport handle losing? Here are a few ideas: No matter how much you want to win, realize that everyone else wants to win also. If you make a mistake, try to stay calm and thing about what you did wrong. Then you will know what to improve on the next time. If the other team wins, congratulate them. Realize that you tried your best. You cannot blame the other team for your losing. Learn to deal with your anger in a positive way, such as, swimming or running a few laps. Understand that even if you lose, you can still enjoy playing with friends.
Team Spirit.
Good sportsmanship also means teamwork. As a part of team, you learn how to work with others to reach a common goal. You need to be supportive of you. One young athlete refers to a time when she was healing from an injury, and her teammates helped cheer her on at swim practice. She said that their support helped motivate her when she didn't feel like swimming.
Beyond the Game.
Good sportsmanship is also about learning the value of hard work, perseverance, and striving for one's personal best. You can apply these lessons to school, music, ballet lesson or any other activity. Keep your focus and have fun!
